Krakow and Auschwitz

Sorry about the gap between blogs, I have been procrastinating...

Auschwitz; we didn't expect this to be a place you would 'enjoy' visiting, but the insights gained from taking a tour, and seeing the scale of operations left us shaking our heads. We had a lovely guide who had been taking tours for 16 years, during which time she had had a number of camp survivors come back through the camp.   I felt she conducted the tour with great empathy. Very sobering stuff and worth paying for a guided tour.

Krakow. A bit of a party town these days it seems. I think there must have been several pub crawl groups that went past our window at various stages of the night / morning.  Apparently it is one of the favoured cheap overseas destinations for hen and stag parties (we saw a few oddly dressed people that looked like they fitted into that category). Some lovely old buildings around the town and once again old city walls and bastions.. Also a pretty magnificent church in the main large square, plus lovely horse drawn carriages lined up waiting to do the city tours (pity about their smell though).  We had an apartment this time so we were able to do some of our own cooking for a change. Quite nice being able to get some groceries and not have to eat out 3 meals a day.
We also joined a free walking tour of the Jewish Quarter in Krakow which was another eye opener. It also took in several locations used in the shooting of Schindler's List. It makes me want to watch the film again and see what I can recognise now.
An interesting 3 days in and around Krakow.
Overnight train to Vienna.
